Wood Pellets


A type of biofuel derived from processed biomass materials such as shavings, sawdust, wood waste, through high speed centrifugation was pressed into pellets and hard.

Pellet fuel is a renewable, clean-burning and cost stable home heating alternative currently used throughout North America. It is a biomass product made of renewable substances – generally recycled wood waste. There are approximately 1,000,000 homes in the U.S. using wood pellets for heat, in freestanding stoves, fireplace inserts, furnaces and boilers. Pellet fuel for heating can also be found in such large-scale environments as schools and prisons. North American pellets are produced in manufacturing facilities in Canada and the United States, and are available for purchase at fireplace dealers, nurseries, building supply stores, feed and garden supply stores and some discount merchandisers.

In short, pellet fuel is a way to divert millions of tons of waste from landfills and turn it into energy.


What is biomass fuel?

Cordwood, wood pellets, wood chips, waste paper, along with dozens of other agricultural products and by-products capable of being used for energy, are all examples of biomass fuel. The most compelling principle of biomass is that it is renewable. The remarkable consistency and burn efficiency of pellet fuel produces a fraction of the particulate emissions of raw biomass. Pellet burners feature the lowest particulate matter emissions of all solid fuels burners. Given the proper Sustainable Forest Initiatives and agricultural management, biomass is virtually limitless, and has proven to be price stable in comparison with fossil fuels.

The majority of North America’s forest is second-growth, and requires periodic treatment in order to address forest health and fire mitigation. A tremendous amount of unusable material remains on the forest floor after such treatment. This material is rejected by high-end wood product manufacturers but is a perfect resource for commercial pellet manufacturers.

By engineering crops and waste such as cornstalks, straw, and residual forest waste, pellets can utilize millions of tons of waste and put them to work.

Many pellet manufacturers take by-products (like wood waste) and refine them into pencil-sized pellets that are uniform in size, shape, moisture, density and energy content. Why not simply burn raw biomass? First, the moisture content of pellets is substantially lower (4% to 8% water–compared to 20% to 60% for raw biomass). Less moisture means higher BTU value and easier handling especially in freezing situations with green raw biomass materials. Second, the density of pellet fuel is substantially higher than raw biomass (40 lbs. per cubic foot verses 10-25 lbs. per cubic foot in raw material form). More fuel can be transported in a given truck space, and more energy can be stored at your site. Third, pellets are more easily and predictably handled. Their uniform shape and size allows for a smaller and simpler feed system that reduces costs. This high density and uniform shape can be stored in standard silos, transported in rail cars and delivered in truck containers.

What are wood pellets?

Wood pellets are a common type of biomass. Biomass is any biological material that can be used as fuel—including grass, corn, wood, and biogas as well as other forestry and agricultural residues. Wood pellets are compressed byproducts from the forest products industry, often woodchips and sawdust.

How are wood pellets made?

Wood pellets are produced by compressing the wood / timber material which has first passed through a hammer mill to provide a uniform dough-like mass. This mass is fed to a press where it is squeezed through a die having holes of the size required (normally 6 mm diameter, sometimes 8 mm or larger). The high pressure of the press causes the temperature of the wood to increase greatly, and the lignin plastifies slightly forming a natural ‘glue’ that holds the pellet together as it cools.

Why heat with wood pellets?

Perhaps the greatest advantage of wood pellet fuel is that they cost, on average, 25-50 percent less than fossil heating fuels and provide more stable pricing. Switching to pellet heating saves, on average, $500 annually vs. heating with oil.  Here are some of the relative cost comparisons of common heating fuels:

Are there differences in wood pellets?

Yes. The difference begins with the quality of the hardwoods used to make the pellets. Dry Creek uses select hardwood materials to ensure the highest BTU output and least amount of ash. The Pellet Fuel Institute sets standards for the grades of wood pellet fuel. Dry Creek Pellets meet or exceed the standard for the highest grades of wood pellet.

Dry Creek sources its hardwood from select forests in New York and Pennsylvania. The climate and soil in these regions produce very dense hardwoods, an excellent source for wood pellets.

Lower-quality pellets are made with a blend of lesser quality hardwood material and have a higher percentage of fines. They can create jamming issues in the stove hopper and burn inefficiently, producing less heat and leaving more ash.

What do I need to know about remaining ash from pellets after combustion?

One byproduct of burning wood pellets is ash, a non-combustible residue. The container in the stove in which the ash is collected must periodically be emptied and disposed of manually.

This ash makes an excellent fertilizer for lawns, for composting or amending soil. Check with your local municipality for regulations concerning the disposal of ash.

How does wood pellet heating compare with traditional wood stove heating?

If you are starting out with an alternative heat source, it can be quite expensive to install a chimney to vent emissions from a wood stove. With most pellet stoves, you can vent through a simple, short stainless steel chimney. Wood stoves must be kept at least a foot from any wall; most pellet stoves can be set up three to six inches from a wall, saving space. From an environmental perspective, wood pellets use wood waste and wood byproducts, so trees are not being cut down expressly to provide the heat source.

Dry Creek Super Premium wood pellets are made with only select hardwoods, chosen to produce superior stove performance. Our Premium wood pellets are made from choice hardwoods to ensure they provide optimal performance.

Where are your wood pellets produced?

Our wood pellets are currently produced in Vietnam.

How are wood pellets delivered?

Wood pellets can be delivered in bulk by one of our vehicles blowing the fuel into your store / hopper, or we can deliver 1 tonne bags or smaller bags on a curtain sided vehicle. We are able to send pallet trucks with curtain siders to aide you in unloading the bags. For bagged pellets we are able to deliver within 3 working days of order confirmation, and a next day service is available at a premium. For bulk blown pellets we require at least 2 working days’ notice although more is always preferable.

Which areas do you deliver to?

We can deliver loose bulk blown and bagged wood pellets throughout the Vietnam and Overseas

What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept payments by BACs, cheque, credit card and debit card.

What is the VAT rate for wood pellets?

Wood fuel sold directly to the end user attracts a reduced VAT rate of 5%. Companies that purchase fuel for commissioning purposes or to sell on to end user are required to pay 20% VAT. If you are unsure of your entitlement to pay a reduced rate, please call us on ….. to discuss.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

We have a minimum order quantity of half a pallet (48 x 10kg bags).

How often do I need to place an order?

This depends on a number of factors, mainly the output of your boiler and the load factor that you place on it (likely to be influenced by the weather). We advise that you check your store regularly, on a weekly or fortnightly basis or you could fit a fuel measuring device that will do this for you.
